As the extent of the damage in Burma is coming to light it is the acts of men, not nature, which may be the most troubling.
Burma, in the middle of a tragedy, seems steeped in red tape.
With a death toll that could reach 100,000, the US has been denied permission to fly aid into Burma and the UN is having difficulty gaining access in any sort of timely manner.
Certainly a staggering amount of people died from last weekend’s cyclone, but to have more die because of political foolishness is beyond me.
Supposedly one major relief group trying to get in and help was told the government offices were closed for a “three day holiday” weekend and to come back Monday.
In the face of tragedy, nothing should be more important than saving lives and restoring faith in humanity – I hope we can at least all come together at that point.
