How Did We Ever Make It As Kids?

As I mentioned in a recent blog, I am on vacation this week and finding myself in pretty remote locations. This also gave me the chance to experience some off the beaten path (for me) experiences.

For starters, I don’t recall eating too many times at a Huddle House (if ever). One look at the menu had me wonder how we ever made it all those years when I was growing up.

The warning, from the menu, was as follows:

“Thoroughly cooking foods of animal origin such as beef, eggs, fish, lamb, pork, poultry, shellfish reduces the risk of food borne illness. Consuming raw or under cooked items listed above may increase your risk of food borne illness especially if you have certain illnesses. For any assistance, questions or comments, please contact the manager. We appreciate your patronage and welcome your comments.”

Of course, this only applied to items on the menu with an asterisk (*) – see photo.

I am going to have to check with my parents to make sure every meal they ever cooked adhered to the above guidelines. Probably not.

Of course, I am not surprised. Most of the items we were able to enjoy as children are long gone.

No longer can we have Jarts (the game with pointy end darts you threw across the lawn) and I am fairly certain the swing set that was never staked down is also off the list – thereby removing the excitement of a leg or two coming off the ground during the swinging. But I digress…

As for the meal, it was fine, and somehow I survived. Then again, after reading the warning I just went with a Diet Pepsi.

  1. But you need to remember the sideeffects of the artificial sweetener and how it might contribute to killing you at some point.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to consume a pot of sugar covered in coffee and light up another cigarette. Later, I’m going to consume raw eggs, as I do about once every 6 months…I should’ve died a long time ago, but this fully loaded soda that I consume nightly has pickled me into immortality!

  2. Well lets how old we are.
I can remember when my deceased wife’s grandmother ate more RAW hamburger then meat loaf?
No warning of food hazard there or then.

    Mervi

  3. I never eat beef well done. I consider well done beef to be nothing more than shoe leather. I never drink diet anything (that aftertaste from the chemical sweetener is disgusting).

With all the scare tactics and fear mongering going on today it is any wonder any of us baby boomers survived. We didn’t have half these problems back then either.

Personally, I don’t think it is the real food that is the problem………I think it is all the chemicals they ADD into the food, and let’s not forget the Frankenfoods we are consuming today.

Now, I’m off to go have a smoke and cup of coffee then cook myself a nice RARE burger for dinner……….LOL

  4. OK SWF…you are now also all clear to add tomatoes…next up – recall on Pickles!
