Where Do Moon Pies Come From?

Not to worry loyal Slow Bleed readers, the usual blog entries will resume next week. Until then, you are stuck with senseless ramblings of my vacation experiences.

Another experience I was able to enjoy during my remote vacation was an experience the gas station attendant referred to as the “breakfast of champions.”

I was up early for a motorcycle ride through the Smokey Mountains when at one point I realized I missed breakfast and was a bit hungry. Not seeing a restaurant in site I pulled into a gas station.

Skipping the eggs that were in jars (I am not that daring even though they did come in four different “flavors”) I took the lead of someone in front of me in line.

A Chocolate Moon Pie and a Diet Pepsi.

Since I am not a coffee drinker I had no problem with the diet Pepsi but how could I have gone this many years without realizing apparently a chocolate Moon Pie was a perfect accompaniment – or so I thought.

Well, there is something else I can take off the list. With 2/3 of the Moon Pie left behind I did not do the meal justice. Maybe next time I will go for the eggs – or at least eat before I leave the house.

  1. Back in 1969, in addition to moon rocks, our hosts on the moon sent back with Neil Armstrong, so pie material….After trying the stuff, politely telling them how great it was, (and wretching later back in the shuttle), it was decided that maybe dipping the stuff in chocolate would make it all better. After all anything dipped in chocolate is better than the original (i.e.: chocolate covered ants, crickets, grasshoppers, strawberries, cherries, et al).
And that is how we got moon pies…unless of ourse you believe the moon landing was faked with pictures made in a remote undisclosed AZ location…in which case, they come from Scottsdale…See Luis…nonono not that Luis, the other one, down on 4th street.
